How to wear colored denim

Spoiler alert: This blog post is entirely self-serving.

I went outlet shopping this weekend, and was able to mark a few things off my Shopping To-Buy List: a maxi dress and colored jeans! The maxi dress is beautiful and comfortable and amazing and pretty much The Best Thing Ever, and you'll probably see me rocking it at Vintage Jane during my next shift. But I digress! I also picked out a beautiful pair of red cropped jeans that I plan to wear from summer into fall. But as soon as the Buyer's Remorse kicked in, I started thinking...what will I wear with them? So here's an Abridged-Vintage-Jane-How-To-Wear-Colored-Denim-Guide!

1. With chambray: Obviously a great pairing since both are very in right now, and it's a no-brainer to the denim-on-denim look.

2. With neutrals: white, cream, blush, nude, ivory. The more, the merrier.

Heck, I would even count animal prints in this category! DO IT. Don't be shy.

3. With black! A safe combo, but still plenty of pizzaz.

Note the addition of animal print...

4. With prints! Go bold. Why not?

DING DING DING! We have a winner! (print shirt + red jeans + animal print flats = amazing)

And if you need the perfect accessories and handbags (or fashion advice) head to Vintage Jane! We love to empower you to rock your own personal style!

Xoxo,

Jane Jessica

P.S. I think any of the above looks would go well with most colors of denim in stores right now, so go for it!

To Be Continued....

I decided it's time for another
hand-stitched owl at Vintage Jane:)
So, wanting this woodland cutie to be
just as fun and artsy as the ones I've had so much fun with before, I looked around in my little studio
to see what inspirational pieces I could use to begin...

I found an old piece of wooden art
at Good Will the other day,
that will make a good base.

I have this great floral yellow fabric
I've been saving that will
 create a softened backdrop...

I love thick, upholstery fabric for the owl body,
so I picked a great base fabric and began hand-sewing
the beginnings of our new little friend...

I'm hoping to bring our new addition in Thursday!
Gotta scoot and get busy!!

Have a beautiful Wednesday everyone:)

Surprise! Not...

Don't you love the mornings when you wake up to lovely surprises? Not really "lovely" surprises, but the dreaded, uh-oh surprises.

You know the ones where you wake up with a jolt, eyes unfocused, heart raising, and your brain running wide open with thoughts of being late or forgetting something oh so important. You think it is going to get better if you just put everyone into high gear and run around like a chicken with it's head cut off, squawking at an unnatural pitch.

You get in the car to realize it won't start, out of gas or the tire is flat. You fix that problem and head out, only to realize that you are hitting EVERY red light and the person in front of you does not know how to use the gas pedal properly.

Using hand gestures is not very Jane, so you bite your tongue, take a deep breath, and realize that the world is not coming to an end at this moment and your reactions ARE going to be remembered tomorrow if you don't rein them in.

These are the days that I have to take my foot off the gas and think that this is God's way of slowing me down because I have obviously sped past something important.

So, be a Jane and watch your surroundings in slow motion before they fly by...

Happy Memorial Day!

Whether you are taking advantage of this long weekend to get some much needed rest and relaxation at the beach or to tackle a DIY home improvement project, do not forget to pause a moment to remember those who served our country.

Here's to my Pa-pa and my husband's Pa-Pa.  Thank you and we miss you!

364 days and counting...

Yesterday I celebrated a birthday of an age that ends in nine. You know what that means, my next birthday will be a milestone. It'll be kind where the first digit of my age changes and it will end in a zero.

I don't consider this a bad thing, just an eye-opener.  I appreciate the wisdom and maturity that comes with age and life experience – but I do want to make sure that not too much more time passes before I do some of the things that are on the I'll-get-around-to-it-someday list. So before my milestone birthday next year here is my to do list:

Learn to play an instrument – I'm not talking concert ready or anything but to be decent enough to say 'yes, I know how to play such and such an instrument' and it wouldn't feel dishonest.

Volunteer locally to people who have no way to repay

Plan a trip – either out west or Europe. I know, big difference in direction. As a family we will narrow it down, make a plan and begin to save so that we can take the trip in the next few years.

Run a 5k – which should be interesting, running to the next block is a challenge now. Maybe my goal should say 'complete a 5k' rather than 'run'.  :)

Be a spontaneous, for-no-reason-at-all gift giver

Learn a new language or take a class - I am still deciding between these two.  Either way, I want to be skilled in a way I am not now.

So, what goals do you have before your next birthday?  What needs to go on your not-going-to-put-it-off-anymore list?

I'm going to get started, I have my list and 364 days.

A Room With A View.....Jane Shannon

When decorating, we tend to concentrate on the inside of our houses.  We try to make sure that each room is complete and looks pleasing but comfortable.  Yet we often overlook the outside and as a result miss out on valuable square footage.  Maybe we neglect the outside because we simply forget or maybe because we have no budget left to do so.  Whatever the case, you can enhance your outdoor living space without much effort or impact on the wallet.  Try the three C's......

1.  Clean - everything looks better when it is clean.  Cleaning cost nothing and the impact is amazing.  This is especially true outside where mother nature can do some damage.  Whether it is leaves and sticks from the wind and rain or pollen in seasonal change, cleaning is a necessity.

2.  Color - Add color by planting beautiful flowers in colorful planters.  The colors, textures and scents will enhance your space immediately.  Planters are also easy to mantain and it is not too expensive to purchase a few potted plants each season.  You can also add additional color with a large umbrella.  Not only do umbrellas come in a variety of colors but they also will provide needed shade on a hot sunny day.  Grocery stores and stores like Garden Ridge have large umbrellas for as little as $45.

3.  Comfort - To enjoy your outside space you need to be comfortable.  Purchase a table and chairs set for dining al fresco.  If that is more than you want to spend, you can get comfortable chairs from stores like Target and Walmart for under $20 and they are available in many colors.  You can also add cushions for even more comfort and color.  If you have an old patio set, do what my friend did and give it new life by spray painting it a bright new color.  She spent $8 on paint, and now has a new look for her tired old patio set.

All you have to do now is sit back, relax and enjoy your room with a view.
